How to access the Internet via MilNetUK from an extension on an MoD exchange First check at the bottom of this page to see if there is already an 'SAB' code for your exchange If not . . . . . read on We have gone to considerable trouble to ensure that the internet is available via MilNetUK to extensions on MoD exchanges. If you have tried to access any of the 'free' ISPs (eg FreeServe) via an MoD exchange you probably havn't been able to. This is because most (all?) other ISPs require a Calling Line Indicator (CLI) signal from your phone (This is so that they can keep track of who is accessing them). The MilNetUK modem dial in number does not require a CLI, and so is compatible with MoD exchanges. (The CLI signal is what is sent down the line to advise the called party who is calling them. On civilian BT lines you can withold CLI, ie be anonymous, by dialling 141 before the number). We have been asked to point out that the phone calls to the MilNet Internet access number are not free. The cost of these calls is born centrally by MoD, who do not wish internet connections from MoD phones to be used for private, individual, purposes. Use for work/business purposes, is, we understand, acceptable. If you are lucky enough to have an MoD extension with 'level 0' access to BT civilian numbers, you need do nothing further other than connect your modem and computer, and configure them correctly. (Send for our CD, or download our connection wizard program). Remember to add the outside line access digit (either 0 or 9 depending on your local excgange). If you do not have 'level 0' access, you need to arrange for a 'System ABbreviated Dial Code' (SAB code) for the MilNetUK access number to be set up on your exchange. The SAB service is provided by INCA (The MoD telecommunications contractor) and is a system on MoD exchanges for dialing frequently used numbers. Typically SAB codes are three digits proceeded with '#6'. To set up an SAB code you should contact you local Authourised Telephone Officer (ATO), and ask him to arrange this for you, INCA will charge his/your UIN a one off fee of about £26. Most large units/garrisons have a nominated ATO who is your link to INCA. If you do not know who your ATO is, phone the INCA helpline on 0800-7314122 who should be able to tell you. Ask your ATO to set up an SAB code for the normal MlNetUK access number which is 0845-6389845. Once you have the SAB code set up (this may take a week or so for all the procedures to be followed) you can access the internet via MilNetUK from any phone connected to the exchange concerned. (After you have connected you modem and computer, and correctly configured them)! If you set up an SAB code on your exchange, please let us know by e-mail to tech@milnet.uk.net - so we can add it to the list below. If you intend accessing the internet using a computer owned by MoD we advise you to consult your Unit IT Security Officer. If you are installing software from our CD or from our MilNetUK.exe program, you will need to modify your Windows dial up networking setup with the SAB code (#6 plus three digits).
