News about MilNetUK

As news about MilNetUK comes in, it will be posted here.

18 Jul 2007. After over six months with the new antispam arrangement, we are very happy with the results. In a typical month, approximate 75% of incoming messages have been rejected as spam, with very few, if any, false positives.

15 Dec 2006. We have now outsourced our antrispam filter to a specialise company in the United States. Initial results are very encouraging.

15 Sep 05. We have now completed the migration from the old mail server. All accounts are now running on the new server, with addition anti spam measures. The old mail server has now been taken out of service.

5 Jan 05. As announced on our antispam page, we have now installed a new mail server with better antispam tools, as well as many other useful features. Each subscriber has password protected access to their own Control Panel on which they can setup various preferences to suit themselves (eg reject all messages from particular addresses). We will be closing down the old mail server some time in the future (date to be announced). Current users are encouraged to migrate to the new server as soon as possible. More details can be found at http://tmail.milnet.uk.net. Please note that after a free introductory month, we will be making a small monthly charge for the use of the new server UNLESS YOU ARE USING THE MILNET 0845 INTERNET ACCESS, in which case use of the mail server remain free.

5 Jan 04. We have now installed, on a trial basis, an AntiSpam Filter at our mail server. Currently it is filtering all mail arriving for the @milnet.uk.net domain. When we have more confidence in the system we will extend it to other domains that we host. More details of the AntiSpam Filter are here.

25 Sep 03. We have retired the hardware from our old mailserver. Its been working for the last 3 years or so, and we thought it about time to replace it before it failed. The majority of the work was done on 24 Sep between 18.30 and 20.00. Inevitably one or two 'bugs' appeared in the system, but we are fairly confident that we now (midday 25 Sep) have mosty of them licked! We apologise for any inconvenience. If you are still having difficulty with you email, please either send an email (if you can!) to jim@milnet.uk.net, or give our help line a call.

19 May 03. Added links to new MilSurf (Prepaid, Unmetered access) pages.

4 Mar 02. Added new SAB code. See bottom of MoD Phones page

31 Dec 01. Important notice - A couple of months ago we announced that we would be introducing quotas (ie max size) for mailboxes to enable us to manage our mail server disk space. We have taken the opportunity over the 'quiet' holiday period to do so. Our mail server is now configured for a default maximiun Mail Box size of 8 MBytes. (We have encreased this limit in a few cases for existing MailBoxes which are already over this limit). Mail Box users will receive an automatically generated e-mail warning them that they are approching the limit when their mailboxes are at 6 MBytes, and another notification by e-mail when the MailBox is full (8 MBytes). When the Mail Box is full the server will reject further incoming mail.

8 MBytes is quite a few e-mails, and the vast majority of our users never get to anything like that size. In order to ensure you do not approach the limit you should:

  • If using the web based access facility, from time to time empty your deleted messages folder, and/or
  • If accessing using POP3 ensure that you e-mail software is NOT configured to leave a copy of the messages on the server.

We have had to introduce quotas as some individuals have subscribed themselves to very active e-mail lists and have not been emptying their mail boxes, this has caused the contents of our server hard disks to encrease without limit.

If you think this will cause you difficulties, or you have any questions, please e-mail jim@milnet.uk.net. We are more than happy to encrease the limit for specific mailboxes if requested. Thank you. JDH 31.12. 01 - Happy New Year!

15 Nov 01. Added anti-virus software to Mail Server. All mail addressed to milnet hosted domains is no virus checked. (Please note though, we dont guarentee to catch all viruses!). Most viruses 'caught' so far have been the 'BadTrans32'.

5 Mar 01. Added a link on the links page to www.army-medic.org.uk

27 Nov 00. Upgarded MilNetUK e-mail server software. This required us to take the server off-line for about an hour on Sat afternoon (25 Nov) between approx 1700 and 1800 hours. Any inconvenience is regretted, but the upgrade should encrease the quality of service, and allow us to introduce some more features.

21 Nov 00. Added link to Ex Magpie Orient web site from Home Page

15 Aug 00. Added Chat server - audio and typing - to web site, with links from home page and horizontal selection bar

4 Jul 00. We have simplified the system for setting up e-mail. It is no longer neccessary to register with MilNetUK before setting up an e-mail account. All that is needed is to choose a name, a domain, and a password. The username of 'guest' and the password 'guest' is still used to access our modems, however. Only use your personal password when collectimg mail.

6 June 00. Bulford telephone exchange is now programmed with an 'SAB' code (#6130). For more information about dial up internet access through MoD telephone exchanges, see this page.

12 March 00. Redesigned web site published. Much the same information, but with a better design. We have put the ISP information in a separate section.
